Why Do I Struggle with Certain Temptations?

10:1 For I do not want you to be unaware, brothers and sisters, that our fathers were all under the cloud and all passed through the sea, 10:2 and all were baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea, 10:3 and all ate the same spiritual food, 10:4 and all drank the same spiritual drink. For they were all drinking from the spiritual rock that followed them, and the rock was Christ. 10:5 But God was not pleased with most of them, for they were cut down in the wilderness. 10:6 These things happened as examples for us, so that we will not crave evil things as they did. 10:7 So do not be idolaters, as some of them were. As it is written, “The people sat down to eat and drink and rose up to play.” 10:8 And let us not be immoral, as some of them were, and twenty-three thousand died in a single day. 10:9 And let us not put Christ to the test, as some of them did, and were destroyed by snakes. 10:10 And do not complain, as some of them did, and were killed by the destroying angel. 10:11 These things happened to them as examples and were written for our instruction, on whom the ends of the ages have come. 10:12 So let the one who thinks he is standing be careful that he does not fall. 10:13 No trial has overtaken you that is not faced by others. And God is faithful: He will not let you be tried beyond what you are able to bear, but with the trial will also provide a way out so that you may be able to endure it.

 1 Corinthians 10:1-13 NET

9:19 For since I am free from all I can make myself a slave to all, in order to gain even more people. 9:20 To the Jews I became like a Jew to gain the Jews. To those under the law I became like one under the law (though I myself am not under the law) to gain those under the law. 9:21 To those free from the law I became like one free from the law (though I am not free from God’s law but under the law of Christ) to gain those free from the law. 9:22 To the weak I became weak in order to gain the weak. I have become all things to all people, so that by all means I may save some.

9:23 I do all these things because of the gospel, so that I can be a participant in it.

9:24 Do you not know that all the runners in a stadium compete, but only one receives the prize? So run to win. 9:25 Each competitor must exercise self-control in everything. They do it to receive a perishable crown, but we an imperishable one.

9:26 So I do not run uncertainly or box like one who hits only air. 9:27 Instead I subdue my body and make it my slave, so that after preaching to others I myself will not be disqualified.

1 Corinthians 9:19-27 NET

Key Points:

1. Temptation is believing your direction is better than God’s direction for your life.

  • I’ve come to learn this truth over the years…God doesn’t want us to succeed without Him.

2.  Temptation is filling a void we feel inside with something other than what God wants for us.

  • Filling the inner void we feel with something other than God is called idolatry
  • Giving into temptation will always cost you more than you realize at the moment
  • There is a direct correlation between resisting temptation and your assurance in God

How to Deal with Disorders

6:11 Some of you once lived this way. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.

1 Corinthians 6:11 NET

Key Theme: We are called to live exemplary, sacrificial lives of freedom - contrary to prevailing cultural norms Character of God (not culture)

  • our pattern for Christian living

When anything is tolerated, nothing is trustworthy

  •  Idolatry = “I am god …”
  • Greed = I want …”
  • Immorality = “I will…”

Outcome = mastered by what we worship; behaving like it Christian ethics = becoming who we really are Cultural norms = disorders Christian discipline = helping others say “yes” by saying “no” Ch 5 > Immoral brother – no boundaries > consequences

Ch 6 > Lawsuits – no forgiveness > revenge

Ch 6 > Immorality based on cultural norms – no idealism

  •  at others’ expense!

Vss. 19-20 “We are not our own; we have been bought at a price” Vs. 11 “washed, sanctified, justified” = getting ready for the resurrection Call to holy living = challenge to living freely

How to Deal with Divisions (Updated)

1:13 Is Christ divided? Paul wasn’t crucified for you, was he? Or were you in fact baptized in the name of Paul? 1:14 I thank God that I did not baptize any of you except Crispus and Gaius, 1:15 so that no one can say that you were baptized in my name!

1:20 Where is the wise man? Where is the expert in the Mosaic law? Where is the debater of this age? Has God not made the wisdom of the world foolish? 1:21 For since in the wisdom of God the world by its wisdom did not know God, God was pleased to save those who believe by the foolishness of preaching. 1:22 For Jews demand miraculous signs and Greeks ask for wisdom, 1:23 but we preach about a crucified Christ, a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles. 1:24 But to those who are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ is the power of God and the wisdom of God. 1:25 For the foolishness of God is wiser than human wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger than human strength.

1 Corinthians 1:10-13, 20-25

Key Theme: We are called to live in unity, despite diversities of opinions and styles of service, in Godly wisdom and power.

Corinth: issues of sex, money, power

Paul’s response to challenge

Context = thanksgiving

Called into fellowship = Divine family

Not religious business, benevolent organzation

Convenanters’ legacy “The fought like cats and dogs over issues - then went and had coffee together.”

Divided by service

6 Keys to unity:

Focus on Christ - His crucifixion

“We never thought to ask!”

How to Treat Earthly Governments

13:1 Let every person be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except by God’s appointment, and the authorities that exist have been instituted by God. 13:2 So the person who resists such authority resists the ordinance of God, and those who resist will incur judgment 13:3 (for rulers cause no fear for good conduct but for bad). Do you desire not to fear authority? Do good and you will receive its commendation, 13:4 for it is God’s servant for your good. But if you do wrong, be in fear, for it does not bear the sword in vain. It is God’s servant to administer retribution on the wrongdoer. 13:5 Therefore it is necessary to be in subjection, not only because of the wrath of the authorities but also because of your conscience. 13:6 For this reason you also pay taxes, for the authorities are God’s servants devoted to governing. 13:7 Pay everyone what is owed: taxes to whom taxes are due, revenue to whom revenue is due, respect to whom respect is due, honor to whom honor is due.

13:8 Owe no one anything, except to love one another, for the one who loves his neighbor has fulfilled the law. Romans 13:1-8 NET

Key Point:  While answering to a higher Ruler, we are called to submit to the governing authorities in love

The “Empire strikes back”

What does it mean to “Be subject”

God is the ultimate ruler but works through appointed governments Living in 2 worlds

“In the world, but not of the world” is NOT in the Bible!

Complete Freedom… With All The Struggles in-between

7:14 For we know that the law is spiritual - but I am unspiritual, sold into slavery to sin. 7:15 For I don’t understand what I am doing. For I do not do what I want - instead, I do what I hate. 7:16 But if I do what I don’t want, I agree that the law is good. 7:17 But now it is no longer me doing it, but sin that lives in me. 7:18 For I know that nothing good lives in me, that is, in my flesh. For I want to do the good, but I cannot do it. 7:19 For I do not do the good I want, but I do the very evil I do not want! 7:20 Now if I do what I do not want, it is no longer me doing it but sin that lives in me.

7:21 So, I find the law that when I want to do good, evil is present with me. 7:22 For I delight in the law of God in my inner being. 7:23 But I see a different law in my members waging war against the law of my mind and making me captive to the law of sin that is in my members. 7:24 Wretched man that I am! Who will rescue me from this body of death? 7:25 Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, I myself serve the law of God with my mind, but with my flesh I serve the law of sin.

8:1 There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. 8:2 For the law of the life-giving Spirit in Christ Jesus has set you free from the law of sin and death.

Romans 7:14-8:2 NET
